Join the Creative Folk at The School of Stuff in Dalston

As we are still writing christmas cards, and finding the odd father christmas hat, and teeny tiny broken off angel wings in the bottom of our decoration boxes here in the Lost Property office, we are dreaming of clear skies, and empty diaries in January 2013. One of the things we are excited about is taking a trip to Dalston, to visit the clever team over at The School of Stuff. Have a little read about them, and find out what exciting new courses they have coming up next year, and you too might think about taking a visit to the East. PS. Here’s a secret from our Mama over at Mama’s Secret London, she heard a crafty bird saying that The School were thinking about putting together new courses for families … promise not to tell ? xo

school of stuff

The School of Stuff is a studio dedicated to teaching crafts in Dalston.  We started small, with ten happy years at Hackney City Farm teaching upholstery evening classes.  Now we have added other core courses to our curriculum including cabinetmaking and furniture restoration, as well as other classes with a furniturey flavour, such as chair rushing and caning, and marquetry.  We are also having a go at other crafts now such as rag rug making and even shoemaking.  Our second floor studio is beautiful as well as purposeful, and we are growing a garden on the roof terrace.  One day soon we might have a bee.

Our core team is a handful of skilled working upholsterers, designers, furniture makers and furniture restorers.  We are also all experienced teachers. Of course, we don’t know how to do everything – or not quite – so we are bringing in the best practitioners we know, to teach crafts that we can’t teach.   So there should be something for everyone – not just furniture freaks.

Our aim is to keep the tuition rigorous but informal, with small class sizes.  We will maintain our core classes in upholstery and cabinet-making throughout the year, and put on a series of weekend craft workshops and intensive five day courses in response to demand. If there is something crafty you have always wanted to do, let us know and we will try and put on a class for you.

Courses and more stuff

Merry Christmas! Short of gift ideas? Look no further!  We are offering School of Stuff gift vouchers now.  Have a look here.

Our next Upholstery Taster Weekend is in January 19th and 20th.  It’s for beginners, as you might expect.

From January 2013 we are running a new 12 week Cabinet Making Basic Skills session, during the day, on Mondays. We start on  7th January, 10.00am to 4.00pm. We cover the same ground as the two evening classes, but combined, more intensive, and cheaper! We are running it at an introductory rate of £600 for the term, as a one-off. Have a look here.

We are finally starting our furniture restoration evening class in January.  It will be on Monday nights and run for 12 weeks, 6.30 to 9.30. It is bookable here. It is called Furniture Restore/Remake and is more than just restoration if you want it to be…

The January intake of our regular evening classes is now bookable: upholstery sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and cabinet making on Wednesdays and Thursdays, all 6.30 to 9.30pm.  Have a look here.

We are running a five day intensive, project based upholstery session at Easter, and that isbookable now too. This is a full-on but very enjoyable week and you can a lot done.
