A Day in the Seventeenth Century!

Saturday 12th January, 2013

Go double Dutch with an Asian twist for a free fun-filled day packed full of talks, performances and activities celebrating our Dutch masterpieces and community-curated ‘Journeys East: A Discovery of Hidden Treasures’ exhibition. Talks exploring our Dutch masterpieces and the histories of the Dutch East India Company will be given by Hilary Williams, Lucy Davis, Curator of Old Master Pictures, and Stefanie van Gemert. Performances will include interactive music sessions with the Joy of Sound, baroque cello sessions with Tabitha Tuckett and costumed performances given by Rembrandt’s Jean Pellicorne and Govaert Flinck’s Young Archer. Families can enjoy making traditional Indian Rangoli patterns and many more exhibition inspired activities. Free, no need to book (suggested donation of £2 per person). Celebrate our Journeys East exhibition by venturing into a seventeenth century world with a unique Asian twist!

Join costumed characters Jean Pellicorne and the Young Archer to discover the fascinating legacies of Dutch seventeenth century trade, economic expansion and the resulting Dutch Golden Age. Enjoy unique musical performances given by the ‘Joy of Sound’ and Tabitha Tuckett inspired by wonderful Dutch Masterpieces painted by Jan Steen and Gabriel Metsu. Get creative by creating your own Delft inspired tiles and experience the world of Dutch poet Jacob Catz by watching ‘Cupid Lost’ filmed by the Children’s Society. Adults can attend talks on Dutch seventeenth century portraits including Frans Hals ‘The Laughing Cavalier’, the journeys and histories of the Dutch East India Company, the international aspects of the Netherlands in the Golden Age, and Dutch Landscape Painting in the 17th CenturyJo Edkins will also provide fascinating demonstrations on bobbin lace making throughout the day, as seen in Caspar Netscher’s painting, the Lace Maker.
