The Place is a fantastic warren of light, airy and inspiring dance studios, and home of The London Contemporary Dance School, The Richard Alston Dance Company. It offers an exciting schedule of theatre, events and performances, summer courses, artistic development, adult classes, resources for teachers and dancers, dance lessons for children in term time and holidays and works with schools through their creative teaching and learning courses.
It also hosts our favourite annual dance event for kids ‘Something Happening‘ which this year is on Saturday 20 July (10-5pm) an event aged at families and kids all under 10 years old. We went last year, and once you have booked your classes/workshops (which you have to, to secure a place) make sure you arrive in good time, to find your studio, grab a coffee (there is a Pret very close too), and let the warm up begin. I can’t think of many other events like this which give you access to the best teachers, in a perfectly relaxing and professional environment, and with totally charming and helpful organisers there to help. The teachers made the classes really warm, inviting and were so wonderful with all the kids it was a real pleasure to be a part of the event.
This year the organisers have scheduled dance performances, free workshops, music, interactive storytelling, poetic robots, unusual ballerinas, an installation by Fevered Sleep, activities for dance explorers, and digital dance by Nic Sandiland. Tickets are only £6 (£20 for group ticket of four people) Book on the link above.
Shuffle is the junior dance company at The Place for young dancers aged 9-14 years.
The company meet every Saturday during term-time from 1-2.30pm. The aim of the company is to develop creative expression and performance skills through a variety of choreographic activities.
Company members will learn about dance composition; how to create original dances as well as improve their technical ability and will be given opportunities to perform at appropriate youth platforms and other events throughout the year. Members will work with professional dance artists and be expected to commit to the whole year as a company member.
Shuffle recruits via Selection Taster Sessions, giving dancers and the rehearsal director the opportunity to work together and decide if this company is an appropriate programme for the applicants.
The Selection Taster Sessions for 2013/14 will take place on 14 September 2013.
Deadline for applications: Saturday 7 September.
Due to the large number of applicants we will divide audition times. We will let you know the time of your slot closer to the selection taster day. Please make sure that you keep the whole day free. If you cannot attend the selection taster day we are unable to offer an alternative date and unfortunately your application for Shuffle cannot be considered.
To book a Selection Taster Session please complete and submit the booking form below. You can pay online, by post or over the telephone on 020 7121 1080.
